Modern JavaScript for Beginners

Values, functions, the DOM and asynchronous code — the working subset of JavaScript you need before any framework.

Modern JavaScript for Beginners

About this course

A first JavaScript course written the way a senior developer explains the language to a new teammate: what to write, why it works that way, and where people usually get burned.

You start with how the engine and the event loop actually run your code, then work through values and type coercion, functions, scope and closures, this, objects and arrays, the DOM and events, and finish with promises, async/await and fetch.

Modern syntax only: const and let instead of var, arrow functions, destructuring, optional chaining, toSorted, async/await and AbortSignal. Every lesson has runnable code you can paste straight into a console, and every module ends with a quiz that checks understanding rather than memory.

Course curriculum

  1. How JavaScript runs and what it stores

The engine, the host, the single thread and the event loop; then values, types and the two traps every beginner hits.

    • 1.The engine, the host and the event loop12 min
    • 2.Variables, types and two classic traps14 min
  2. Functions, scope and this

The three ways to write a function, what a closure really captures, and why this keeps disappearing from handlers.

    • 1.Functions as values12 min
    • 2.Scope and closures14 min
    • 3.this and how it gets lost12 min
  3. Objects and arrays without surprises

Destructuring, spread and its one-level limit, non-mutating array methods, and the map/filter/reduce trio.

    • 1.Objects, destructuring and spread14 min
    • 2.Arrays: mutating versus copying12 min
    • 3.map, filter and reduce15 min
  4. The DOM and events

Finding and building elements without breaking the page, and handling clicks with one listener instead of fifty.

    • 1.Finding and changing elements12 min
    • 2.Events, bubbling and delegation13 min
  5. Asynchronous JavaScript

Promises, async/await, running requests in parallel, and talking to an HTTP API without swallowing errors.

    • 1.From callbacks to promises and async/await15 min
    • 2.fetch: talking to an API15 min
